Debate Outline
I am so glad we all have access to Discovery. We are able to discuss with our debate groups and Professor Gillespie about this debate and better understand the assignment. Gotta love those social networking sites.

A. Crossing national boundaries and bridging cultures, i.e. friend in Africa
B. Motivate people to participate in community
1.Lead author Keith Hampton with the University of Pennsylvania's Annenberg School for Communication says, "All the evidence points in one direction. People's social worlds are enhanced by new communication technologies. It is a mistake to believe that social networking sites plunge people into a spiral of isolation."
C. Finding friends with the same weird interests
D. Soul mate
1. According to statistics 18% of marriages are people meeting online.
2) Social networking sites increase and strengthen the economy by providing ways to network for jobs and businesses.
A. Sisters growing business
1. There's only one reason why my sister was able to open a second restaurant despite Utah's worst recession since the 1930s.
She attributes the success totally to a social networking site because of what it's done it clearly increased business.
Today, her profile page for the restaurant has over 1,800 fans. She uses it to promote new menu items and events at the restaurant, and gather customer feedback.
B. cyber- check on applicants when looking for an employee.
1. Rusty Weston, chief blogger at the social networking Web site My Global Career, said social networking sites can serve as a professional search engine.
C. Companies big and small benefit
1. Technology research company Forrester Research said almost two-thirds of retailers have invested in the social-media frenzy in some way and another 22 percent plan to get involved in the next year.
Through social networking, people can use networks of online friends and group memberships to keep in touch with current friends, reconnect with old friends or create real–life friendships through similar interests or groups. Besides establishing important social relationships, social networking members can share their interests with other like–minded members by joining groups and forums. Social networking can also help members find a job, establish business contacts and promote business, in turn boosting the economy.
