What does it mean to say that nonverbal communication is multi-channeled?
The channel is the medium through which a message or information travels. Speaking or writing are both examples of single channeled mediums. The voice is the only channel used to communicate over the phone. However there are multi-channeled mediums such as non-verbal communication that are useful when in the presence of others. Non-verbal communication is considered multi-channeled because you can use more than one channel to deliver your message. Things such as, talking while using hand gestures, body language and facial expressions are all channels used in non-verbal communication.
What does it mean that nonverbal communication is ambiguous? Explain with an example form the text.
"We have to interpret nonverbal cues. With interpretation comes ambiguity."(pg 129.) A lot of when we interpret is altered by our perception, culture, assumptions and bias. Interpreting nonverbal cues is not a science it is so much about context and the person giving the cues. Your interpretation of the nonverbal cues will, more often than not, show your biases. Someone could be stressed and you interpret their nonverbal communication as anger, perhaps because you father was a very angry person as you were growing up. In the corse textbook on page 131 a story is told about a man, Robert Noel. Noel was on trial for involuntary manslaughter. He sat through the proceedings with, what he thought to be, a blank look on his face. The jury interpreted the look differently. They saw Noel as "unremorseful and generally unpleasant." This illustrates nonverbal communications ambiguity.
Explain the ways that nonverbal and verbal communication interconnects.
Nonverbal and verbal communication interconnect by many ways including; repetition, accentuation, substitution, regulation and contradiction. Repetition is when the same message travels through different channels. An example of repetition would be if you mother looked at you and said, "No." as she shook her head from side to side and maybe even waved her finger back and forth. Accentuation can interconnect verbal and nonverbal communication when you punch the wall to make a point when you are mad or to intensify your message. Substitution can help to convey a message without using words. "A wave can substitute for goodbye." Or a smile for affirmation. Regulation is the connection which keeps conversation going. The pauses after you finish a sentence, letting the other person or people know that they may contribute. Or the loudening of your own voice so you are not interrupted. The last is contradiction. This connection is very hard for children to grasp. It is sending mixed messages. When you say you are sad while you laugh or shake your head no while saying yes.
